Before we can fully grasp the life we have in Christ, it’s important to understand where we started—in Adam. Every person on earth begins in this condition, and the Bible is clear: being “in Adam” means participating in the consequences of his choice to rebel against God.
When Adam sinned, humanity sinned. When Adam faced death, we faced death. 1 Corinthians 15:22 says it simply:
“As in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.”
This spiritual reality explains why everyone is born separated from God, disconnected from the source of life and love. Sin and death are not merely about individual choices—they are part of a condition we inherit as part of Adam’s family. Romans 5:12-13 reminds us:
“Therefore, just as through one man’s sin entered into the world, and death through sin, so death spread to all men because all sinned.”
Even though Adam and Eve were created in God’s image (Genesis 1:27), their choice to live independently of God changed everything. Spiritual life—the life rooted in God’s love, acceptance, and purpose—became inaccessible. Humanity, like cups turned upside down or fish out of water, was cut off from the flow of God’s life. No effort, no striving, no self-righteousness could restore it.
But here’s the crucial point: understanding the bad news of Adam prepares us to appreciate the incredible good news of Jesus. Knowing the depth of our separation makes the grace and transformation offered in Christ all the more remarkable. What we inherit in Adam is death and separation—but what we receive in Christ is life, reconciliation, and abundant spiritual vitality.
Today, take a moment to reflect: your starting point wasn’t hopelessness or failure—it was the reality of being in Adam. And now, through Jesus, you have been rescued and placed in Him, where life, love, and freedom flow.
A Prayer For Today:
Father, thank You for showing me the truth about where I started and what I was rescued from. Help me never take for granted the life I now have in Christ. Open my eyes to the abundant grace, love, and spiritual life You freely give, and help me walk daily in the freedom and joy of being Your child. Amen.
